Throughout our careers it’s easy to forget the basics of usability and the user experience as we focus on new and more challenging design usability techniques, ideas and theories. Flashback! Here is an infographic that reminds us of three key communication theories and how they are applied to usability to improve the user experience.

Overview:

  1. Hick’s Law: Increasing number of choices will increase decision making time.
  2. Fitt’s Law: The time required to rapidly move to a target area is the function of the distance to a target and the size of the target.
  3. Miller’s Law: The average number of objects a person holds in working memory is seven plus or minus two.

Here is a strange story to remember them all together.

A country Hick has too many guns to choose from (death by choice). None of them Fitts
his hands correctly; when he shoots, he often misses – especially small targets far away
(target acquisition). Instead, he remembers that he’s better at drinking Miller beers
(memorability). With some focus he can down 7 +/-2 bottles. No wonder he’s so chunky.

Check out the infographic below.
